Mahale Mountains National Park

Overview

Mahale Mountains National Park at a Glance

Remote, magical, and breathtakingly beautiful, Mahale Mountains National Park in western Tanzania is a true hidden gem. Nestled along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, this park is renowned for its steep, lush forests, pristine lakeside beaches, and Africa’s best chimpanzee safaris.

Mahale is one of two little-known parks in western Tanzania, alongside Katavi National Park. Both are extremely remote, challenging to access, and relatively costly to visit, yet they offer experiences unlike anywhere else in the country. For wildlife enthusiasts, Mahale is particularly special – it may be the best place in the world to observe wild chimpanzees.

The park covers approximately 1,600 km² of mountainous rainforest and lakeshore. Powder-white sand beaches meet a backdrop of verdant tropical mountains, while electric-blue butterflies dance above clear streams. The forests are alive with vibrant sounds of wildlife, including Tanzania’s densest population of primates. Yellow baboons, red colobus, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervets can often be spotted, but the stars of the park are undoubtedly the chimpanzees.

Mahale is home to around 1,000 chimpanzees, including the famous Mimikire clan, habituated by researchers since 1965. Led by the alpha male Alofu, the M-group numbers around 56 individuals. These chimps are free to roam but are accustomed to human presence, allowing visitors to observe them closely on guided chimpanzee safaris. For their protection, all visitors must wear surgical masks while near the chimpanzees.

With its combination of pristine landscapes, rich biodiversity, and rare wildlife encounters, Mahale Mountains National Park offers an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime safari experience, perfect for adventurers seeking both beauty and tranquility in the heart of Tanzania.
