The Best Time to Visit Uganda

Discover the best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, chimpanzee tracking, birdwatching, and unforgettable safari adventures.

When is the Best Time to Travel to Uganda?

The best time to visit Uganda is during the two dry seasons. These fall between January to February and June to September. During these periods, the weather is drier and cooler. As a result, trails are more manageable and gorilla trekking conditions are at their best.

However, Uganda is a year-round destination. In fact, every season offers something unique and rewarding. The wet seasons bring lush green landscapes and fewer crowds. Moreover, they often come with lower prices and better availability. Therefore, the best time to travel to Uganda depends largely on what you want to experience.

Uganda sits on the equator. As a result, temperatures remain relatively warm and stable throughout the year. Rainfall, however, varies significantly by season. Consequently, understanding Uganda’s weather patterns is key to planning the perfect safari.

Month by Month Guide for Travelling to Uganda:

Visiting Uganda from January & February

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest during the best time to visit Uganda — January dry season

January and February are among the best months to visit Uganda. These months fall within the main dry season. As a result, this is peak time for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The forest trails are drier and easier to navigate. Furthermore, the reduced rainfall means clearer skies and better wildlife sightings across Uganda’s national parks.

Game viewing in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Park is also excellent during this period. In addition, January and February are great months for birdwatching. Many migratory bird species are still present at this time of year. However, because this is high season, it is important to book gorilla trekking permits and accommodation well in advance.

Travelling to Uganda from March to May

Lush green landscapes in Uganda's national parks during the rainy season — March to May low season travel

March to May is Uganda’s long rainy season. During this period, rainfall is heavier and more frequent. As a result, some roads and forest trails can become difficult to access. Nevertheless, this low season has its own distinct appeal and advantages.

Landscapes are strikingly lush and green during these months. Moreover, accommodation rates are generally lower and gorilla trekking permits are easier to obtain. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding at this time. In fact, many migratory species arrive in Uganda between March and May, making it a favourite period for serious birders.

Gorilla trekking is still possible during the rainy season. However, trekkers should be prepared for muddy trails and wet conditions. Despite the rain, wildlife remains active and game viewing can still be very rewarding.

Visiting Uganda from June to August

June to August is the best time to visit Uganda for most travellers. This period marks the beginning of the long dry season. Consequently, it is the most popular time to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga forests. Trails are at their driest and most accessible during these months.

Game viewing is also outstanding from June to August. In addition, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest is highly rewarding during this period. The dry conditions make wildlife easier to spot across open savannah landscapes. Furthermore, the weather is pleasantly cool and comfortable for outdoor activities.

Because this is peak season, gorilla permits and safari lodges book up quickly. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to plan and book at least six months in advance.

Visiting Uganda from September to December

September is still part of the dry season. As a result, it remains an excellent time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking and game viewing. October, however, marks the start of the short rainy season. This continues through to December.

During this period, rainfall is lighter and shorter than the long rains of March to May. Therefore, safaris and gorilla treks remain very much possible and enjoyable. Moreover, the landscape transforms into a beautiful tapestry of green. This makes October to December a wonderful time for photography and birdwatching.

December is also a popular month for visitors travelling over the festive period. In fact, the short rains often ease towards the end of December. As a result, late December can offer a good balance of green landscapes and manageable weather conditions.
