Frequently Asked Question About Safaris from Zanzibar

Absolutely! Combining a safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday is one of the most popular ways to experience Tanzania. Many travelers choose to relax on Zanzibar first and then embark on a safari, or vice-versa. Flights between Zanzibar and the mainland parks are short and convenient, making it a very feasible option.

The most accessible parks from Zanzibar, especially for shorter safaris or day trips, are in Tanzania’s Southern Circuit:

  • Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve): This is the closest and most popular option for safaris from Zanzibar. Flights are short (around 1-1.5 hours) and the park offers diverse game viewing, including boat safaris on the Rufiji River.
  • Mikumi National Park: Also in the Southern Circuit, Mikumi is another accessible option, often chosen for shorter 1-2 day safaris due to its proximity to Dar es Salaam.

For those wanting to experience the iconic Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire), fly-in safaris from Zanzibar are common and highly recommended, though they require more time (typically 3-5 days minimum).

The most common and recommended way to travel from Zanzibar to the mainland safari parks is by light aircraft (fly-in safari).

  • Flights depart from Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) to various airstrips within or near the national parks (e.g., Seronera for Serengeti, various airstrips for Nyerere/Selous).
  • These flights are quick and efficient, often taking between 1 to 2.5 hours depending on the destination.
  • Ferry and road travel: While you can take a fast ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (approx. 1.5-2 hours), and then drive to a Southern Circuit park like Mikumi, this adds significant travel time and is generally less convenient for accessing most safari areas compared to flying directly. For Northern Circuit parks, driving from Dar es Salaam is prohibitively long.
  • Day trips to Nyerere or Mikumi are possible, but involve very early starts and late returns. While they offer a glimpse, they can feel rushed.
  • Overnight safaris (2-3 days) to Nyerere or Mikumi are popular and offer a more immersive experience.
  • Northern Circuit safaris (3-5+ days) from Zanzibar are common, flying into Serengeti or Arusha, then driving between parks like Ngorongoro and Tarangire.

The ideal duration depends on your budget, time constraints, and the depth of experience you desire.

While technically possible via a very early morning flight, a day trip to the Serengeti is highly ambitious and generally not recommended. The Serengeti is vast, and a single day provides only a very superficial experience. For the Serengeti, we strongly recommend at least a 2-3 day safari (flying in) to truly appreciate its scale and wildlife.

You can expect a full and authentic safari experience, just like starting from the mainland:

  • Game drives: In open-sided 4×4 vehicles with pop-up roofs for optimal viewing.
  • Expert guides: Knowledgeable local guides who track animals and provide insights into the ecosystem.
  • Accommodation: Ranging from comfortable tented camps to luxurious lodges within or bordering the parks.
  • Diverse wildlife: Opportunities to see the Big Five and a vast array of other African animals and birds.
  • Activities: Depending on the park, you might also have options for walking safaris, hot air balloon safaris (Serengeti), or boat safaris (Nyerere).

If you’re taking light aircraft flights for your safari, adhere to the strict luggage limits, typically 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs) per person in a soft-sided bag. You can often store excess luggage at your hotel in Zanzibar or at the airport. Your safari operator will advise on specifics.

Generally, yes, because the cost of domestic flights from Zanzibar to the safari parks is added to the overall safari price. However, the convenience and time saved often justify the additional expense for many travelers who wish to combine both experiences seamlessly. Many tour operators offer combined “Safari & Beach” packages that can be cost-effective.
