Itinerary: Wildebeest Migration River Crossing

day 1

Arrival in Arusha

You’ll need to arrange your flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) for domestic travel. Upon arrival, a WeGuide Africa Safaris representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha. That evening or the following morning, you’ll meet your local guide for a detailed safari briefing. You’ll spend your first night at a peaceful accommodation, which is the perfect place to relax before your African adventure begins. This marks the start of your unforgettable Tanzania safari experience.

day 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we set off for Tarangire National Park. The park is named after the Tarangire River, which flows through it. This “river of warthogs” serves as the only water source for wildlife in the region during the dry season.

In some areas, the vegetation is quite dense, featuring elephant grass and acacia woodlands. The park is renowned for its elephant families, which can often be seen gathering by the river. You may also spot giraffes, bushbucks, and hartebeests. These animals are closely followed by various predators, including lions and leopards.

Tarangire National Park is home to the largest population of elephants in Tanzania and boasts more breeding species of birds than any other place on Earth. It is the best location to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat, from the adorable calves to the impressive bulls.

After enjoying a packed lunch, we will head to our accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay at Marera Valley Lodge or a similar location.

day 3

Central Serengeti National Park

This morning, you will head to the well-known Serengeti National Park. Along the way, you’ll stop at a Maasai village to learn more about this fascinating warrior culture. Once you arrive in the Serengeti, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch before embarking on an incredible game drive. If you visit this region of the Serengeti between May and July, you’ll have the opportunity to witness a spectacular event—the great migration of wildebeests crossing the Grumeti River. The herds must navigate the swift-moving waters and evade crocodiles before facing predators waiting on the other side. It’s a magnificent sight to behold. You will spend the night at a tented camp in the Central Serengeti.

meal:

day 4

Serengeti National Park

You will rise early to leave your camp and spend the entire day traveling across the plains alongside the herds, enjoying the sights and sounds of the great migration. Witnessing the annual migration of hoofed mammals in a clockwise circle, accompanied by predators, is an incredible experience. The Serengeti is the best place to see all five members of the Big Five: lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo—all within one park. At the end of the day, you’ll return to the camp, where you’ll spend the night and enjoy dinner. The camp offers stunning views of the Serengeti.

meal:

day 5

Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater

You’ll head out for a game drive in the Serengeti’s central region after breakfast. This area is well-known for its profusion of lions and leopards, which are typically easy to spot. This central area offers year-round, spectacular game viewing. You’ll savor the sights of unending plains and breathtaking fauna, including pangolins, ostriches, hippos, giraffes, elephants, and cheetahs.

After having lunch at Serengeti, you will be heading to Ngorongoro for an overnight stay and dinner.

meal:

serengeti to ngorongoro crater

day 6

Ngorongoro Crater to Karatu

On this day, you’ll head toward the Ngorongoro Crater. Nearly 30.000 animals, including the Big Five, are housed there. Zebras, buffaloes, lions, wildebeest, baboons, elephants, flamingos, ostriches, hippos, cheetahs, and the endangered black rhinos are all abundant in the crater. The crater appears almost surreal due to the stunning colors and moving clouds. The Ngorongoro Crater was selected as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders due to its breathtaking natural beauty.

You will make your way to Farm of Dreams Lodge for dinner and the night in the late afternoon.

meal:

day 7

Lake Manyara National Park then Arusha

After breakfast, your safari guide will meet you at your accommodation. You will then set out for Lake Manyara National Park. This relatively small yet diverse park is named for its shallow salt lake, which covers a significant portion of the park’s surface area. The lake experiences flooding and drying with the seasons and is home to thousands of flamingos, along with around 500 other bird species.

During your exploration of the park, you may encounter monkeys, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, and, with some luck, lions lounging in the trees. The park is known for its varied landscapes, which include open grassy plains, primate-filled woodlands, and cliffs dotted with baobab trees.

After an extensive game drive through the park, you will head toward Arusha Planet Lodge.
