When and Where is the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The timing of the Great Wildebeest Migration is closely tied to seasonal rainfall, which makes it difficult to predict with exact precision—sometimes, even the wildebeest don’t know when to move! In recent years, shifting climate patterns have made the rainy seasons less predictable, causing the migration to fall slightly out of sync.

Despite these changes, our expert guides in Tanzania use their in-depth local knowledge and real-time tracking to anticipate the migration’s movements with impressive accuracy. That’s why our safaris are a top choice for travelers eager to witness this extraordinary wildlife event up close.

Month-by-Month Breakdown:

December to April

The Great Wildebeest Migration usually begins in late November or early December, as massive herds arrive in the southern Serengeti, particularly in the Ndutu region. Here, nearly two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles spread across the lush plains, feeding on fresh, nutrient-rich grass.

February marks the calving season, when around 500,000 calves are born within a few weeks—a truly remarkable sight. This abundance of vulnerable young also attracts predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, creating intense wildlife drama.

By April, the rains begin, and the herds gradually move north toward the central and western Serengeti. As the grasses grow taller, the wildebeest enter their mating season, setting the stage for the next cycle of this epic migration.

May to June

During May and June, the wildebeest and zebra herds push northward, preparing for one of the most dramatic moments of their journey—the Grumeti River crossing, where giant crocodiles lie in wait.

This is a powerful and emotional spectacle, as thousands of animals face strong currents and lurking predators. Not all will make it, but those that do press on, continuing their migration.

Some herds travel through the Grumeti and Ikorongo Game Reserves, while others follow a route that cuts through the heart of the Serengeti National Park, moving steadily toward the northern plains.

July to September

Between July and September, the herds reach the Mara River in northern Serengeti—a key point in the migration and one of its most intense moments. To continue into Kenya, they must brave the fast-flowing waters and lurking crocodiles, creating a dramatic and often chaotic scene of panic and determination.

The Mara River crossing is widely regarded as the most perilous part of the journey, with thousands of wildebeest and zebras battling strong currents and predators in a desperate attempt to survive.

Interestingly, in recent years, many herds have chosen to remain in the northern Serengeti, avoiding the river entirely due to the abundance of fresh grass in the area.

October to December

From October to November, the wildebeest herds make their way south from the northern Serengeti, moving through the central Seronera region toward Ndutu. By late November or early December, they arrive in the southern plains to feed on the fresh grasses brought by the rains—signaling the beginning of a new migration cycle.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE GREAT WILDEBEEST MIGRATION IN TANZANIA?

It’s hard to say what the best time is to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration, as it all depends on what you’d like to witness. Also, given how unpredictable the rain seasons have become, pinpointing the exact date is mighty difficult.

In general, we can divide the migration into five events/seasons:

February to AprilCalving & breeding seasonSouthern Serengeti
May to JuneGrumeti River crossingWestern Serengeti
July to SeptemberMara River crossingMasai Mara and Northern Serengeti
